Is Drill music a bad influence

Drill Music

Drill Music is arguably the most influential genre for young people in the UK today. With often violent lyrics and hard hitting beats, we ask music artist Marc Jones his thoughts as we look at what the Bible has to say about the music we listen to and how it can affect our walk with God.

Is Drill Music a negative thing?

A lot of people look at the positive things the young drill artists have been able to do with their lives through the music they create but neglect the negative consequences often caused by the lyrics in their songs. It’s not the sole cause of the violence among young people we see today as some would like to suggest, however, due to the power it holds over young people and its influence, artists must take responsibility and be held accountable for the lyrics they choose to write.

Should Christians listen to drill?

It’s a personal decision and down to your own personal conviction. In Philippians 2:12, Paul talks about working out one’s own salvation with fear and trembling, this still rings true today. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is this really helping me?
  • Am I seeing my behaviour/thought patterns change as a result of listening to this music?

It’s good to be aware of what’s happening in popular culture and not just be in our own Christian bubble, but we should never immerse ourselves in anything more than we do God’s word.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

The values in drill music often go against the values stated in the verse above. For those thinking of making drill music and for those listening to it, let’s be the influence rather than the influenced. Let’s seek to change the culture rather than let it change us. Ask God to give you the courage to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him.
